Nothing was better today than seeing the sun shine and getting a jump start on our amateur gardening adventure. Zinneas, brandywine tomatoes, rocks. Earlier this week, during a window of unsupervised activity, Liam planted a hard-boiled egg in the middle of the yard. He has marked the area off with tomato stakes and has faithfully watered the spot twice a day. He tells us he is growing an eggplant. I go back and forth between thinking I should plant some real seeds over the egg or just going along with the boy. He believes so surely that a plant will emerge from that spot, I am inclined to wait and see.

Your son Liam is an imaginitive boy and logical thinker. It would stand to reason that an egg planted in the ground should, according to his 3 year old thinking grow an eggplant. So I can see why you are tempted to make something "more fun" of his plan and plant real eggplant seeds. On the other hand, would the natural consequence of planting an egg teach Liam more about real life through his impending disappointment, than "fixing" his botany experiment. Later, after his tears have dried, he could be helped to "discover" vegetable seeds in packets at the store and become a budding gardener in the process. My brother and I still talk about the day when I was 6 and he was 4 that we found a dead wren in the backyard, climbed the steps to the windowed landing in our Pennsylvania home and prayed to God that He would bring our sorry little bird back to life. And we discuss our feelings then in context to life's predictable disappointments today. Cheer Liam on. Help him water the egg now, but be there for him when he discovers the inevitable that will surely happen.
Please please plant a packet of peas (I recommend green or garden, not sugar or snow). They are our favorite crop--fresh peas from the pod often turn veggie spurners into veggie lovers. They are a cool weather crop so planting earlier is better. Loving hearing about your adventures from time to time! And love that Liam has planted an EGG!
