rethinking the baggie

Beginning our first year of school, and just a half day at that, I am already pondering what our cumulative plastic bag consumption will be by graduation. Yikees! And we just bring a snack.

My neighbor and I talked about the crazy ways we are trying not to send any containers that will end up in the trash (like the glass spice bottle I put blueberries in today) and yet not go out and spend money on the fancy reusable wraps and bags. I guess we are those weird moms. But, after hearing from more than one reliable source about the mass of plastic floating in the middle of the ocean - maybe twice the size of Texas, they say - I definitely hesitate to think of adding to it.

So, here's a snack bag that I fashioned - with thanks to my neighbor's idea to cut up the waterproof ski gaiters she had packed away. The velcro was already in place, which made them easy to sew. I plan to send Liam to school with apple slices in one tomorrow. Not sure if it will be cool or odd. But I'm sure he'll let me know. Any other ideas from lunch and snack packers who avoid baggies - and whose kids are hailed as rock stars for toting reusable wares - would be appreciated!

I made a bunch of these 2 weeks ago before school atrted. I used different fabric cloths with different liners. I used an old, ready to toss outdoor patio tablecloth forsome of the liners and some oilcloth I had for some others. Someone made the comment to me that they wouldn't be as clean as a plastic bag, but I've tossed them in the machine and there's been no issues as long as I air dry them. Next up I want to try a velcro reusable sandwich wrap like this one: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=30600820&ref=sr_gallery_8&&ga_search_query=wrapalong&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=price_asc&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title

My mom used to make us bring our plastic baggies back! She would wash and reuse. Of course, they did get thrown away eventually, but she was way before her time, no? Plus, we had to bring lunch boxes and thermoses, and let me tell you, they were NOT cool when I was in middle school. =) My real idea is to make reusable "baggies" out of oilcloth. You can get it cheap these days because summer is almost over. All you'd have to do is zigzag and add velcro - what do you think?
